The Stags

These Islands snapped on the horizon from Long Strand, Rathbarry are off the coast of Reen (County Cork, Ireland).

They look like they are floating above the water.

Known locally as ‘The Stags’ they feature right at the beginning of a wonderful boat trip I took in October 2015.  It’s interesting how they look so upright from the angle I took from the land when on closer inspection you can plainly see how they all lean over.

I took this video on my iPhone using the slow-motion setting.

Notice how much more you can see when the action is slowed down.  For example the trail of bubbles the dolphin leaves as it breathes out just before breaking the surface to catch the next breath.

Although we would be mistaken to interpret the fixed curve of the beak as a smile or sign of any emotion, the behaviour of these dolphins intrigued me.  After all, they are completely wild creatures that chose to come to the boat.  Sometimes they even seem to swim sideways to take a look at us.  I can’t help to feel they are expressing curiosity, even exuberant playfulness.
