Chilling Lions

These three young male lions I photographed in the Klaserie, Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa look like they’re chilling right?

Don’t be fooled.  They were patiently waiting…

With their ears pricked up they were listening carefully to the sounds of a Warthog hiding down an underground burrow.

Every now and then, the dominant one from the group would get up, saunter over to the entrance of the burrow and start digging.

Our wildlife guide (Jason) presented us with a dilemma.  Fresh Leopard tracks had been spotted not very far away.  Do we want to stay and watch the drama unfold, or shall we see if we can find the Leopard?

We decided to leave and look for the Leopard.  Why?

The fact is that it is perfectly possible that the Lions wait for six hours or more before the cornered Warthog attempts to make his escape.

Talk about patience…

…Chilling Lions indeed!
